Industrial Design for Tech Products that Ship.

I help companies design and develop innovative technology hardware products that customers love through an efficient, adaptable process.

Bringing a new hardware product to market is hard

The complexities of research, design, engineering, marketing, and getting the product out the door can be overwhelming. You need the right design partner to work through the challenges with you in an efficient and adaptable way.

I've spent the last decade working with some of the most innovative companies in technology. I've shipped dozens of products from cameras to medical robotics with teams large and small. I now work independently to provide efficient and high-value design services to companies looking to ship their next product.

Brands I've worked with:

FAQ

Who are you?
I'm an industrial designer with over a decade of experience working in technology hardware products in Silicon Valley. I was formerly a Partner at Bould Design, the studio behind iconic hardware designs for brands such as Nest, Roku, and GoPro. I led design teams for clients large and small, in the consumer and enterprise hardware spaces. The work shown here was all done at Bould Design and represents the best design work that I personally owned or contributed significantly to as a leader. Since mid-2022, I've been operating as an independent industrial designer. I also post daily thoughts on design on LinkedIn, and write regularly for my blog, Design Things.
Where do you work?
I currently work out of my home studio in San Francisco, California. If you're interested in doing a project, it does help if you're in the San Francisco Bay Area, but I've successfully worked remotely with clients all over world. I will travel for projects, if necessary. International projects welcome.
Are you taking on new clients?
I'm currently booking clients for Q2 of 2023. I only take on 2-3 clients at a time, depending on the size and scope of the engagements. Feel free to book a call if you'd like to discuss a project.
How do you price your projects?
The price of a product design project can depend highly on the complexity of the product and how much involvement you require from a designer. I work on a per project, fixed fee basis, with a minimum project price of $10,000 USD. For a more accurate estimate, feel free to book a call. I'm not currently taking on equity based projects.
What software do you use?
All CAD is done in SolidWorks and delivered in either native SolidWorks format or STEP files. Product visualization stills and animations are done in either KeyShot or Blender. All other visual design work is done in either Adobe Creative Suite or Figma.
Do you do engineering work?
I do not do any deep engineering work, but I've shipped enough products to know what's possible and design with a very engineering-friendly approach. I'm very comfortable working with engineers and have collaborated successfully with in-house engineering teams and consultants. I also have a network of engineers that I can refer if needed.
Are you hiring?
I'm not currently looking to hire any staff.
